Match Report
- The Bulls squad was strengthened by the addition of captain James Queree (who had had an accountancy examination) and Sol Solomon (who had been on trial with Dover Athletic) but lost influential midfielder Adam Trotter who picked up an injury at training on Thursday evening and so watched the match in a Jersey pub instead!
The team travelled back to last week’s venue which British Airways share with Bedfont & Feltham to resume battle with the last team met last season before it was called to a halt.
The pitch was cut shorter this week but the cricketing members of the fraternity would surely have been calling for the heavy roller as the recent dry conditions made it very bumpy.
Queree returned to the back four with Jack Griffin moving to the bench, alongside Sol Solomon, while Arthur Illingworth made his first start for the club having been a playing substitute last week.
British Airways boasted a 100% record and with no goals conceded, having won 2-0 at Bagshot last Saturday before defeating Fleet Spurs 1-0 at home in midweek.
The match was again streamed live back to Jersey so those at home saw the Bulls kicking off towards the clubhouse end. The Bulls had much of the early possession but they were being closely marked on a man to man basis by the opposition which restricted the opportunities for both sides.
A number of free kicks for the Bulls around the 25 yard mark failed to seriously test the ‘keeper but after 34 minutes Ruben Pestana was brought down in the box. Many thought it was a clear cut penalty but unfortunately the referee did not see it the same way so half time arrived goalless.
Manager Gary Freeman changed the team formation for the second half and this brought about more space in which to play. Pestana was again crucial when the opening goal came after 58 minutes. His burst through the middle was halted by the Airways ‘keeper, Ben Clargo, but the ball rebounded to Fraser Barlow to tuck way and give Bulls the lead.
The opposition responded immediately and caused ‘keeper, Bradley Rolland, to make his first worthwhile save of the evening. Just after the hour Sol Solomon was brought on to add more fire power up front and Jack Griffin was added to the central defence with Queree moving wide.
Pestana could also be credited with the assist for the second goal with quarter of an hour to go. His fierce shot was not held by Clargo enabling Illingworth to mark his full debut with a goal.
British Airways had not given up. Rolland produced the most spectacular save of the match to tip over a powerful 25 yardshot with eight minutes remaining but the Bulls saw out the rest of the match for a solid, if not spectacular, win.
Once again those back home watching the streaming servicewere given a short list of three by the commentators for the Bulls’ player of the match. 63 votes came in, just over half the number attending the actual match, and the award went to full debutant and goal scorer Illingworth with 28, pipping central defender Luke Campbell 19 and the other goal scorer, Barlow,16.
The win moved the Bulls up to 4th in the table which became 6th after the rest of the weekend’s programme was completed, but with a game in hand on most of those around them.
