Match Report
Horsham win 4-3 on penalties.
Horsham “Hornets” first entered the F.A. Youth Cup in the mid1970s and again briefly in the early 1990s before becoming regular entrants in the late 1990s. This season they beat local rivals Broadbridge Heath 4-0 in the Extra Preliminary Round before fighting off a second half comeback at Colliers Wood United to win 4-3 in the Preliminary Round. The teams learnt earlier in the day that the winners of this match would travel to Kingstonian in the Second Qualifying Round.
Horsham, of the Isthmian League, sold Queen Street, their old town centre ground of over a hundred years, for re-development in 2008. However, their intended new ground at Holbrook to the north of the town was thwarted by local council rejections. They, therefore, spent an itinerant decade at Worthing, then Horsham Y.M.C.A. and finally at Lancing. Eventually they received the go ahead to develop in the Hop Oast area off the Worthing Road to the south of the town, moving in to their smart new accommodation with its 3G pitch in July 2019.
Jersey made two changes to the side that won 2-1 at Burgess Hill Town in the previous round. Jacob Videgrain took the place of Harry Gladdish in goal whilst another Harry, Scott, came in for Seb Figueira as an attacking option.
Jersey kicked-off attacking the clubhouse end to the south-eastern end of the ground and promptly forced an early corner when ‘keeper George Edgley was forced to tip a shot over the bar. Two more immediately followed as Sammy Henia-Kamau tried to find a way through for a Jersey side dominating the early stages. Captain Miguel Carvalho was also causing problems for the Horsham defence down the right flank.
Having weathered the early storm, Horsham settled and Tristan Pereira-Leeatin beat three men on the left and put in a cross that was just too high for Sami Zagdouni to reach at the far post.
Just before the half hour Sammy Henia-Kamau was set free by a long ball over the top. He cut in and beat a defender but Edgley was able to parry his placed attempt.
The front men were otherwise now finding it much harder to work their way through the Horsham defence.
The break arrived goalless with Horsham having come back into the match. They had managed to put in some crosses but nothing to unduly trouble Videgrain.
On the resumption Videgrain punched away an early Horsham corner. Horsham’s Ilias Hazouza was then dispossessed in midfield by Henia-Kamau who fed his captain Miguel Carvalho but the skipper blazed the chance over.
Just after the hour Henia-Kamau just failed to reach a chance at the far post before flashing a great opportunity just wide of the right post after being set up by substitute Ben Shirley.
Shortly afterwards Leandro Vieira had his shot blocked before Harry Scott allowed Edgley the chance to save his after a good cross in from the left.
Horsham captain, Ezekiel Ndhlovu, and team mate Eugene Moteane, fired high and wide respectively before ‘keeper Edgley took the match to penalties by tipping one shot over for a corner and then saving well again from Henia-Kamau.
Jersey went first in the shoot-out at the Clubhouse end but Edgley excelled again by diving low to his right to save their opener from Charlie Brennan. Skipper Ndhlovu put Horsham ahead before his opposite number, Carvalho, put his effort just wide of the right post. James Archard consolidated Horsham’s lead before Joel McKinlay opened Jersey’s account.
Tristan Pereira-Leeatin gave Jersey some hope by blazing Horsham’s third over the bar. Sammy Henia-Kamau and Leandro Vieira kept the pressure on Horsham to convert their remaining attempts but substitute Charlie Gibson and finally Wallace were up to the task.
Horsham rode their luck at times with their ‘keeper, George Edgley, saving them on numerous occasions. Jersey will rue failing to convert any of their many chances. So, it is Horsham who will now travel to Kingstonian in a fortnight.
