Match Report

Another difficult fixture with newly promoted Whyteleafe lying third (7-1-3 28-13).
James Carr and Luke Watson returned to the side with Fraser Barlow and James Sunley making way. They were both on the bench along with Adam Trotter and Jay Giles with Ewan Brodie jettisoned.

There were many half chances but very few clear cut ones as both sides probed for openings and Jersey sought to frustrate the talented Whyteleafe side. Miguel Carvalho and James Campbell were both off target with early headers before Stefan Ilic put a twenty-yard Whyteleafe free kick just over the bar. Rai Dos Santos put another header over before producing a moment of magic for what turned out to be the only goal of the game.
Goalkeeper Euan Van der Vliet launched a long diagonal kick forward which Dos Santos brought down on the left corner of the Whyteleafe box. His first touch was so good that it took him clear of defenders Aaron Goode and Hani Hachachena and he finished with aplomb past Slavomir Huk before ending with his trademark celebratory back flip near the right corner flag.
Jamie Mascoll shot over for Whyteleafe midway through the half before Lorne Bickley worked an opening in the right channel only to drag his cross shot wide. Jordan Johnson-Palmer put in a powerful twenty-five yard attempt that Van der Vliet only grabbed at the second attempt before Dos Santos failed to get enough curl on a twenty-yard shot meant for the top right corner.
Immediately after the interval Dos Santos broke free down the left and although his cross was behind Carvalho the diminutive wide man got in a back heel shot that unfortunately went straight to Huk.
Whyteleafe responded through Stefan Ilic who shot just wide whilst Jersey chances fell to Toby Ritzema who headed over, and Joe Kilshaw who shot straight at Huk.
2 / 3Midway through the half substitute Daniel Bennett wriggled through and from close in shot for the bottom right corner. It lacked power and Van der Vliet was able to save.

An Ilic curling free kick from twenty-two yards was well placed and again lacked the pace to defeat Van der Vliet who moved across for a relatively comfortable catch. Jersey finished on the front foot in the closing moments with Huk saving at Carvalho’s feet and when a Bickley shot was blocked Kilshaw half volleyed over.

A hard fought victory, one per cent inspiration, ninety-nine per cent perspiration.
