Match Report

Ash United having won their opening game 18-1 had lost six of those players on their return to University and arrived with the minimum nine players. It transpired the league rules allow nine a side but the other team is still permitted a full squad of sixteen, of whom seven are rolling substitutes.

One of the Ash players was asthmatic and so was put in goal with the regular 'keeper playing out. They swapped at half-time and it made quite a difference. However, the damage had been done by then with Jersey five goals to the good. The second half was a draw, albeit with all seven Jersey substitutes being used.

Jersey made three changes to their squad from their opening game a fortnight ago. Rachael McCartan was promoted to the starting line up in place of the unavailable Aine Ruth with Charley Skinner, Coco Leonard and Soraya Da Conceicao on the bench in place of Ruth, Alena Clyde-Smith and Lara Couvert.

The teams were tentative at first but Ash won their first, and only, corner after three minutes only to put it straight behind. Jersey took the lead just after quarter of an hour when Leah Morris gave Anita Tavares the chance to drive home powerfully from ten yards. Holly Muirhead-Sundby crossed from the right for newly introduced substitute Samantha Silva at the far post to volley back into the bottom right corner for the second.

This opened the floodgates as Jersey scored four times in twelve minutes. Tavares put Muirhead-Sundby through for the third before a solo effort from Tavares quickly followed. Muirhead-Sundby had a penalty claim waved away before scoring her second in added time.

After the interval Ash played with two banks of four to make themselves difficult to break down and when they were their reinstated 'keeper, Stacey Bishopp, pulled off some excellent saves. Nevertheless, Muirhead-Sundby completed her hat-trick just after the hour and substitute Emily Le Page hit the left post. A defensive mix up saw Hannah Sutch score a consolation for the visitors and dent the hosts perfect defensive record after 162 minutes of league play.
