Match Report

Jersey welcomed Camberley Town to Springfield. Last season they finished 10th in the league with a 15-7-16 61-61 record. This season they were 13th 8-7-13 42-51 but with a run of difficult fixtures ahead of them. Jersey had a good recent record against “the Krooners” with 4-0, 3-0 and 3-0 wins.

Camberley went out of the F.A. Cup at Lydd Town 0-1 in their opening competitive match of the season and they also lost to the only goal of the game at home to Fisher in the F.A. Vase. They lost to Bedfont Sports on “penalties” in the Combined Counties Cup but they were still in the Southern Combination Cup. Their eight league wins had included doubles over both Fleet Town and Guildford City and they recently held Knaphill to a goalless draw.

Jersey had James Queree (in Thailand), Luke Campbell (wedding), Kamen Nafkha(another wedding) and Adam Trotter (golf) all unavailable. Will Byers returned in place of Frank Tobin, Ruben Mendes took the Trotter spot and Francis Lekimamati

came in for Miguel Carvalho. Calvin Weir recently re-signed after finishing his accountancy examinations went straight into the starting line up in place of Luke Watson. Watson joined Tobin and Carvalho on the bench alongside Sammy Sutcliffe, returning from a broken ankle, and Lorne Bickley available again having had the eight stitches removed after his head injury received at Knaphill last week.

After a very wet previous 48 hours, which had wiped out all local football, it was only 7C with a strong and chilly South-West wind. This was bringing heavy hail showers with it, including one in the latter half of the first period after Camberley had kicked off attacking the Robin Hood end.

Both sides looked to get forward with Camberley looking to probe with through balls

between the back four but usually overhitting them. Barlow brought a save out of the visiting ‘keeper after quarter of an hour and three minutes later Lekimamati cutting in from the right had his shot parried across the face of an empty goal. Weir and Cavan Atkinson converged on it with the defender just managing to block Weir’s attempt.

Jersey thought they had taken the lead as the interval approached when an excellent through ball from Barlow put Mendes clear only for an offside flag to halt the celebrations. In added time it was the visitors who took the lead when Sam Whitfield put Stan Jones away right of centre and his low cross shot found the bottom corner.
Giles and Weir, the latter injured just before the break, were replaced by Tobin and Carvalho at the interval. Lekimamati had a shot pushed over by Owen Crawford before Carvalho, who had provided a number of dangerous balls into the box, scored the equaliser just before the hour. A diving Jonny Le Quesne header, from a Lekimamati cross, was blocked as was the follow up shot from Mendes but Carvalho rocketed the ball into the top right corner with an impressive finish. Jersey failed to find a winner, only one win from six at home now, as they were again held to a 1-1 draw by a mid-table side, a point that Camberley were the more pleased with.
