Match Report

Jersey hosted tenth placed Cranleigh (2-2-6 13-28) looking to finish the first phase of the season with a perfect record. Not wishing to inflict another hammering of a lower club the team initially lined up with the main goal scorers playing in midfield and teenager Amy Guthrie making her full debut up front. Numerous chances were put wide or over in the first half hour with Holly Sundby, Guthrie and Taylor Smythe all guilty of spurning opportunities with Laura Murray in the Cranleigh goal being kept busy. Murray was also quick off her line on numerous occasions to cut out through balls for the onrushing forwards. The Cranleigh team also worked hard closing down any Jersey threats. It was not until the latter stages of the half that Jersey opened the scoring after a forward ball from Anita Tavares found Guthrie on the edge of the box. Unfortunately for Murray the previously excellent ‘keeper let the youngsters shot squirm under her dive.

After the interval Jersey reverted to their more usual set up and benefitted accordingly. Sam Silva pulled a ball back from the right corner to Tavares of the corner of the box and she hit a first time curling lob over Murray and into the top left corner. Shortly afterwards after a surging Smythe run up the left flank Natasha Keen harried the defence into an error in the left channel and the ball fell to Leah Morris who quickly sized up the situation, looked up, took careful aim, and lobbed Murray from even further out into the top right corner. Three goals in seven minutes in the later stages gave the score a more realistic look. Tavares set up Holly Sundby and shot powerfully into the bottom corner from near the penalty spot. Five minutes later Silva harried the defenders and this time from the loose ball Tavares found the same spot as Sundby. Tavares was also the provider of the final goal when she found Morris on the left side of the penalty box and a carefully placed cross shot brought up the half dozen.
