Match Report

Jersey Women made their league debut hosting Old Tiffinians from East Molesey.

The club was started by the former pupils of the Tiffin Grammar School in Kingston, and they added a women’s side five years ago. They were relegated from the Premier Division last season with a record of 0-0-16 9-107 and arrived with only one substitute. Jersey continued that run with a convincing 7-0 victory that could easily have been double figures.

Jersey dominated the match and were set on their way by the pick of the goals. Sam Silva put in a cross from the right that was deflected back to Georgia Swinburn in the opposition goal. She advanced to the edge of the penalty area but her clearance only reached Leah Morris thirty-five yards out. Morris controlled it with one touch and with her second lobbed the stranded Swinburn.

The second goal arrived five minutes later when a throw near the left corner flag was flicked on by Emily Le Page. Silva blocked the defender’s clearance, passed inside to Morris and the latter found the left corner from ten yards. Morris’s corner from the left led to the third goal. It rebounded off a defender to the left corner of the box where Holly Muirhead-Sundby thwarted another attempted clearance, looked up, and carefully placed a cross shot into the bottom right corner. Within seconds the fourth goal was scored when Natasha Keen, taker of all the free kicks, floated one diagonally from the right channel and Ella Brennand rose highest to find the top right corner. Brennand was later chosen as player of the match by the visitors.

After the flurry of four goals in ten minutes there was a scoring lull until added time. Morris near the halfway line played the ball forward to Muirhead-Sundby who in turn sent Anita Tavares clear by threading the ball between two defenders. From the edge of the box Tavares coolly found the bottom right corner. At the break Jersey made a triple substitution and quickly added another two goals to their tally. Skipper Tiffany Sundby crossed from the left and Tavares harried the indecisive defence. Keen returned the loose ball to her on the right side of the box and Tavares’s cross deflected off a defender which Swinburn could only parry to Silva a yard out.

What turned out to be the final goal stemmed from a roaming run down the left flank from her own half by Sundby. Again, her cross eventually reached the right side of the box where Morris’s low cross was stabbed home by Tavares from six yards.
