Match Report

The young Bulls hit Raynes Park Vale for six on a chilly evening at Springfield where they were cheered on by the first team who had stayed on after their Vase victory over Athletic Newham.

Jersey are the first team through to the quarter-finals but will need to wait to see whom their opponents will be as Ashford Town v P.F.C. Victoria was postponed two weeks ago. The winners of that tie will in turn host Colliers Wood United to determine who has to play Jersey. Jersey are drawn at home but may have to travel away in the New Year to fulfil the fixture.

Conor O’Keeffe was promoted from the bench to lead the attack in the absence of Sammy Henia-Kamau who had been called up to play for the first team in the afternoon. Amongst the substitutes were Conor Lloyd and Ben Shirley, both making their debuts.

Jersey kicked-off attacking the Town End and Seaney McColgan set them on their way after just six minutes. He finished off a Leandro Vieira, Harry Scott move that gave him time to pick his spot. McColgan doubled the lead, when set up by O’Keeffe, before the twenty-minute mark. He had already seen another shot saved and then a long-range attempt, when he spotted the keeper of his line, drift wide.

Before half-time McColgan was denied his hat-trick when the overworked Charlie Dawson in the visitors goal parried his shot only for skipper Miguel Carvalho to smack in the rebound.

After the break O’Keeffe’s shot from a narrow angle was blocked but Vieira chased the rebound down and swivelled from near the penalty spot to send a rocket into the roof of the net.

With the match safe Jersey brought on Leighton Gilroy and Barry Beatson for the first half goal scorers, McColgan and Carvalho, with Vieira taking over the armband from the latter. Vieira was not captain for long as with a quarter of an hour left Joel McKinlay became the third Jersey skipper of the match when Lloyd and Shirley came on for Taylor-Jack Woodley and Vieira.

Substitute Gilroy was the creator of the fifth goal with a sweeping run down the right before his cross was helped on by O’Keeffe for Scott to put away and it was Gilroy who made it half a dozen when he despatched a straightforward header from a Beatson cross.

It was pleasing to see more chances being put away, after the numerous ones scorned in previous matches. Similarly pleasing was the “mean” defence that has conceded just a solitary goal in their four fixtures so far this season.
