Teams stayed ends, Jersey kicked off attacking the South end 1.31.05

Jersey visited Hendon who now play at Kingsbury after losing their historic Claremont Road home. Three times Amateur Cup winners they played in the Isthmian Premier 1977-2018 before being re-located to the Southern League 2018-24. Returning to the Isthmian they were relegated in 2025. Last season in the South-Central Division 1 they finished 17th. This season they were ninth (4-4-2 24-17).

Jersey’s team showed three changes to that which had beaten Moneyfields 1-0 on Tuesday. Joe Kilshaw and Casey Nixon were rotated with Jarma Mohamed and Sammy Henia-Kamau. Captain James Queree, back from honeymoon, replaced Darryl Mvalo on the bench.

Hendon, who drew 1-1 at Raynes Park Vale on Tuesday, made two changes. John Shamolo replaced Sam Shaban as striker with Ethan Creary taking on the armband. Shaban was on the bench along with Elliot Oviawe with Jaden Celestine-Charles and Tashae Andall-Gibbons dropping out of the squad.

The match started with Jersey looking as if they would win at a canter but with Hendon launching long balls with the wind behind them, they soon pulled one back and looked the more dangerous as Jersey lost two influential players to injuries. After the interval
with the wind now behind them Jersey re-asserted themselves and regained their two goal cushion only to concede again shortly afterwards. Another wind assisted defensive error saw Jersey sew up the three points.

Jersey started quickly and Casey Nixon had an early shot saved before giving Jersey the lead when converting a Toby Ritzema low cross from the left. When Ritzema scooped another ball forward to Lorne Bickley the striker turned a defender before hitting a low cross shot in the bottom right from a narrow angle. Hendon reduced the arrears when the wind held up a long ball forward which Jame Watling did not head cleanly back to Euan Van der Vliet. Florian Ada nipped in and the ball fell to John Shamolo to shoot home.

Hendon continued to press and had a couple of chances that they failed to capitalise upon. At the other end Henia-Kamau, who had replaced Ritzema after he pulled a thigh muscle, brought a save at the base of his right post from Joshua Strizovic, captain after Ethan Creary was another early injury victim.

The worst injury was a clash of heads between two Jersey players just before the interval. After a lengthy delay Van der Vliet continued but Watling was led off with a hefty piece of wadding over his left eye. Hendon’s Florian Ada was cautioned for his part in the incident but that appeared to be a harsh decision.

In the extended added time Jack Lumsden scraped his own bar with a header as he defended a corner with Jersey clinging on to their lead.

Immediately on resumption Ada sent a low left wing cross just beyond the far post as it eluded Shamolo in the centre. On the hour James Sunley looked to have extended his run of goals when played in by Bickley. He flicked the ball past Strizovic but Ezekiel Williams got back to clear off the line.

Bickley soon added his second. A ball forward from Sunley saw him hold off substitute Tom Howard in the right channel and find the bottom left corner. Hendon soon struck back. A cross from Ada to the far post was headed out by James Carr straight to Williams who did not hesitate and he hit a fine first time shot past Van der Vliet.

Play continued with Jersey the more likely to score but with the danger that Hendon might draw level if the ball fell their way. However, it was another defensive misjudgement that gifted Jersey their clincher. Luke Watson launched a long ball forward which Ivan Imasuen looked favourite for, but he misjudged the flight and pursuer Henia-Kamau was able to nip in and score past the stranded Strizovic.
