AFC Whyteleafe

Whyteleafe win 4-3 on penalties.

Jersey had overtaken A.F.C. Whyteleafe in the last match of the season which meant that they met at Springfield rather than in Surrey for this play-off. Both sides had been promoted from the Combined Counties League last season and matches between them were cagey affairs, often with only a single goal scored. Whyteleafe arrived a point behind Jersey but with a better goal difference — the division's second-best attack and third-best defence; Jersey had the meanest defence in the league.

The match was a cagey affair with so much at stake and the sides knowing each other well. There was scant goalmouth action; what there was in the first half was mostly Jersey trying to break down the massed Whyteleafe defence. Toby Ritzema made an excellent run down the left but his cut-back was blocked by Slavomir Huk's leg, and just before the interval Carvalho wriggled through the middle before being brought down on the edge of the area.

There was early drama after the break with Carvalho pulling a hamstring, and a 37-minute delay when a floodlight cluster at the Town end failed and an electrician was called. Lekimamati's close-range shot hit Huk on the forehead and rebounded for a corner — the seminal moment on 77 minutes.

With no extra time in the Isthmian semi-finals, it went to penalties at the brighter Robin Hood end. Jay Giles, Rai Dos Santos and James Queree scored; Lekimamati and substitute Joe Kilshaw were denied or off target. Whyteleafe converted all four to win the shoot-out 4-3 and advance to the final — without having scored in their three matches against Jersey all season.
