Teams stayed ends, Raynes Park Vale kicked off attacking the Town end 1.00.20
Jersey returned to Springfield after three successive away matches and facing old rivals Raynes Park Vale who lay in third place (7-0-4 19-18) one point behind Jersey, having played one game more. Raynes Park had finished 3rd to Jersey’s 4th in 2021-22 and were champions in 2022-23 when Jersey finished third. They are the only club to have completed the double over Jersey wining 2-1 at Springfield in early April 2023 and completing it with a 4-0 win in the last game of the season, albeit a “dead rubber” for Jersey. Since gaining promotion Raynes Park have finished 6th, 9th and 14th in the higher division.
Jersey’s team showed three changes to that which had drawn 3-3 at Windsor on Tuesday. Jonny Le Quesne, Jamie Watling and Jack Lumsden replacing Jay Giles, Joe Kilshaw and Casey Nixon who were all on the bench.
Raynes Park Vale made two changes to the team that beat Bedfont Sports 2-0 with ten men on Tuesday after Tushuan Walters was dismissed for his second caution midway through the second half. Faebian Witter replaced Marcus Hill in goal and Jamal Abubakari and Mohamad Kamara swapped roles with the former starting.
Jersey put on a commanding performance to defeat Raynes Park Vale for the first time in their five meetings. Walters was cautioned for simulation after only three minutes and after a foul that would have normally earned another caution he was substituted after twenty minutes before he got himself dismissed for a second consecutive game.
Before that Jersey had taken the lead from the first corner of the match. James Sunley played a short corner to Sammy Henia-Kamau who jinked past two defenders and pulled the ball back from the left byline. It evaded those at the near post but found Watling ten yards out at the far post to score into the roof of the net.
Ritzema was the second simulation card and Henia-Kamau shot across the face before scoring the second after an excellent through ball from Sunley. He still had to drive on and shoot across the advancing Witter. Ritzema hooked a high volley just wide before the half hour before Raynes Park putting a looping header onto the bar from their first corner five minutes before the break.
From it Ritzema made the assist of the season with a determined run from the right corner of his own box to the left corner of the opposition’s. From there he played the ball inside to the unmarked Bickley to finish off.
After the interval Henia-Kamau beat his marker on the left and chipped in a cross from which Sunley glanced into the bottom right after which Jersey started resting players. Nevertheless Henia-Kamau put over a Ritzema cross and had a shot parried by Witter before on the hour Sunley was just wide from twenty yards.
Substitute Darryl Mavalo scored his first Jersey goal after being on for only four minutes. James Carr reached the left byline, but his cross was blocked. Mvalo swivelled on the rebound and found the top right corner with his cross shot.
Raynes Park scored a consolation with a quarter of an hour left when two substitutes combined. Mohamad Kamara played a long ball forward to Shamal Edwards on the edge of the box. He turned and found the bottom right corner.
The game fizzled out in the late October sunshine but there was a surprising outbreak of “handbags” after the final whistle which saw both Jersey ‘keeper Euan Van der Vliet and a clearly incensed Raynes Park captain Tobi Ogundega cautioned.
