Jersey with four play-off wins so far had still to meet Meadow Sports and Milford &Witley, their two closest rivals in the “regular” season. The youthful Meadow Sports side who finished second had opened their play-off campaign with two narrow victories, the latter last week against Milford & Witley so victory today almost certainly meant a top two promotion finish and probably the title too for the visitors. Jersey had triumphed 4-2 when the teams met at Springfield in early November but having led 3-0 early on, they were pulled back to 3-2 before a clinching goal with a quarter of an hour to go.
Jersey kept the squad that had beaten Hartland last week except for two substitutes,Chantelle Renouard and Sophie Thornton, who did not travel, with Roisin Flynn starting in place of Emily Le Page. Meadow Sports, except for one less substitute, had an identical squad to the one that visited Springfield. This time Sophie Barnard and Lucy Mills started instead of Nicole D’Aloia and Anya Beeharry.
Jersey started well against the team of twins and Leah Morris soon whistled one of her long shots just wide. Just after the quarter hour the same player gave them the lead. Holly Sundby won the ball on the right, fed it inside and Morris’s cross shot from the right corner of the box rattled in off the top of the far post. Meadow Sports almost equalised straight away. Charlotte Waas escaped the clutches of Danielle Bradshaw and Holly Benest for once, but Tayah Vasse was out quickly to nick the ball off her toe just before she could shoot. Play remained largely a midfield battle until the interval.
Meadow Sports who had had to make an early substitution made two more at the interval as the war of attrition continued. Within five minutes Aine Ruth received a knock on her head and was replaced by Emily Le Page. Jersey eventually settled matters with twenty minutes remaining. Roisin Flynn, who was a constant threat down the right, made another run and found Anita Tavares at the far post, and after one touch for control, she shot back across Jessie Nicholl in the Meadow Sports goal. Within a minute it was three. Tavares, on the edge of the box, laid the ball back to Holly Sundby who cracked in a strong low shot from twenty yards that Nicholl failed to get down to as the ball found the bottom right corner. It was subsequently generously credited to Tavares as it skimmed off her on the way through. Jersey wrapped it up in added time when Tiffany Sundby just managed to keep the ball in play on the right. She surged forward and her cross was volleyed home in the middle by Tavares.
At the conclusion of the match the away supporters group presented Tavares with their Player of the Season award for her 40 goals and 31 assists in the 17 matches played so far.
