After being knocked of the F.A. Cup on Tuesday it was a clash of two unbeaten sides in the league. Originally this was to have been in Jersey but with the extent of cup involvement still unknown it was thought prudent to reverse the fixtures before Burgess Hill were met for the first time. Therefore, if Jersey had been involved in the Second Qualifying Round today it would have been less inconvenient for Winchester supporters who might have already booked flights. It did not suit all supporters who had planned well ahead, but it was thought to be the lesser of two evils.
Winchester having transferred from Southern League Division 1 South where they lost in the play-offs after finishing fourth had started strongly. They were lying third with a high scoring 3-2-0 15-3 record, whereas Jersey were 11th with 2-1-0 4-2. Winchester had initially topped the table after starting the season with three wins and thirteen goals but had since drawn two league games and been knocked out of the F.A. Cup and F.A. Trophy. Jersey made one change to Tuesday evening with Toby Ritzema available again and replacing Casey Nixon. Harry Curtis and Fraser Balow replaced Jack Lumsden and the injured Miguel Carvalho on the bench. It was Jay Giles 200th appearance and Elliot Powell’s 100th match in charge.
Winchester City, who had last played a fortnight ago when they drew at home to Bedfont Sports 1-1 made three changes. Sam Godfroy, Thomas Bragg and Lewis Brown were elevated from the bench with Charlie Burden and Archie Whitfield going in the reverse direction. Callum Baughan dropped out of the squad with Wilfred Hawes being added to the substitutes.
An evenly contested first period saw little goalmouth action although both sides looked to open the scoring. Jersey’s best moment came just after the midpoint when Toby Ritzema beat George Milner-Smith to a loose ball in the right channel, and his
powerful cross shot was palmed away at the near post by Danny Dixon. From the subsequent corner Jamie Watling did well to get a header on target as the ball was behind him so it lacked power, but it still brought a save from Dixon diving to his left. The biggest threat to the Jersey goal came just before the interval when Bradley Waters broke down the left and played a dangerous low cross towards the penalty spot. It needed a Giles sliding tackle to beat Lewis Brown to the ball with Watling clearing up.
Almost immediately after the re-start Ritzema reached the right byline and chipped the ball to the far post where Lorne Bickley could only head into the side netting. Jersey continued to apply pressure and before the hour Ritzema got through in the right channel, but two sliding covering defenders snuffed out the cross. As Jersey looked to be in the ascendancy, they were reduced to ten when Jonny Le Quesne picked up his second caution, doubly unfortunate as the first caution looked to given after simulation by Bradley Waters. Joe Kilshaw was sacrificed so that Harry Curtis could take up Le Quesne’s position. Winchester naturally came back into the game but with quarter of an hour left Bickley set Sammy Henia-Kamau clear in the left channel but his cross shot narrowly missed the far post. In added time Henia-Kamau worked his way to the left byline before Dixon dived at his feet and Winchester came as close as they had all match when substitute Ryan Carroll curled his effort just over from the edge of the box to leave the match all square and both sides still unbeaten in the league.
